Vâdak Storm

(Original post here
Trigger: Irene)

In Irene's canon, the afterlife generally consists of degrees of Heaven. But it's worth bearing in mind that this doesn't necessarily mean that it's all butterflies and rainbows for everyone who dies.

Between mortal worlds and the Kingdom of Light, there exists a labyrinth of astral planes that angels call the Vâdak.

The afterlife is pretty much literally what the psyche of the soul makes it. For example, if a soul is weighed down by negativity, grudges, or has been conditioned to believe that they're going to Hell, then that's what they'll get. The soul's psyche will imprint on one of the astral planes of the Vâdak, and until they overcome that negativity or whatever's dragged them to Hell, that's where they'll stay.

For this storm, the affected would be dragged to the Central Plaza and trapped inside dream-like projections of their own negativity or their own sins. Maybe a murderer would finally feel the pain of his victims, finding himself in the hands of a sadistic entity that reflects his ruthlessness. Maybe a thief finds themselves robbed of everything precious to them, having to trek a place brimmed with their worst fears to get it back. Maybe someone who's been murdered finds themselves being stalked by their killer, needing the courage to face them down and accept what happened. Really, the possibilities are endless.

This doesn't mean that unaffected don't get to play a part, however. While the Central Plaza will be sealed off with a spherical veil, unaffected will be able to pass through it and into the imprinted planes of the affected Wakened. They'll be free to try to help a friend find their way out or guide them, but outside entities stepping into these planes tend to come across as monstrous or malicious to the souls trapped inside (hence why angels don't interfere too heavily). It can also become dangerous for unaffected, the longer they stay. The longer they stay in what is effectively someone else's mind, they might find themselves losing their own memories or pieces of their own identity.

At the end of the week, the Vâdak will vanish. Affected Wakened that overcame their nightmares/sins will be awarded a pin of silver angel wings, while Wakened that didn't quite overcome it will be given a silver coin, with 'don't give up' engraved on it in angelic runes.
