Ascension Essays
If you feel your character is ready to ascend to the status of an Angelii or an Ashura, then please check the criteria below and submit an essay.
* Essays must be provided via a direct link to your character's journal entry. This enables you to edit your essay at your leisure, without being forced to delete and re-submit if changes are made after comments have been received.
* Essays must be thorough and carefully proofread, and should thoroughly describe all the reasons you believe this character is ready to advance in status. The style and format is up to you, but an essay that is well-written and easy to read is more likely to be chosen by voters. Be sure to include which rank you're submitting the essay for in the subject line of your comment.
Angelii Criteria
To Ascend to the status of Angelii, the following criteria must be met:
* The character must be a resident of the city for a minimum of four months.
* The player must have passed the previous three activity checks.
* The character must demonstrate a fairly significant amount of change.
* A higher level of activity is expected of characters who Ascend, due to the IC responsibilities involved with this status. Instead of providing two pieces of activity per month, there must be three acceptable qualifications to pass each activity check. Only partially meeting this criteria will result in de-Ascension (unless a save is made, see point #8 under Rules for more information). The character will have to wait at least one round before being allowed to re-apply.
Ashura Criteria
To Ascend to the status of Ashura, the following criteria must be met:
* The character must be a resident of the city for a minimum of one year, and be an Angelii for a minimum of six months.
* The player must have passed the previous three activity checks.
* The character must be competent in their duties of Angelii, and demonstrate instances where their abilities were exercised in the game. An ill-trained Angelii will not ascend to Ashura.
* A higher level of activity is expected of characters who Ascend, due to the IC responsibilities involved with this status. Instead of two pieces of activity every two months, there must be three acceptable qualifications to pass each activity check. Failure to fully meet this criteria will result in de-Ascension (unless a save is made, see point #8 under Rules for more information). The character will have to wait at least one round before being allowed to re-apply.
How the Number of Ascended Slots are Determined: The slots are based on population ranges; 5-10% for Ashura and 20-25% for Angelii. Before each poll is held, a population check is carried out and the number of available slots adjusted. Those numbers are then used to help determine how many Angelii and/or Ashura may be elected in the current poll.
Current Range of Available Angelii Slots: 9 to 14 open slots (19 in use / min of 19 allowed, max of 24) (Listed Names)
Current Range of Available Ashura Slots: 1 to 5 open slots (4 in use / min of 5 allowed, max of 11) (Listed Names)
Do I need to be nominated in order to submit an essay?
- No. If you want to encourage another player/character to submit, you may do so personally, but nominations are no longer required or necessary. Just turn in an essay when you feel your character is ready.
When will votes be held?
- Polls are held three times per year - once every four months in April, August and December. The deadline for essay submissions is 11:59PM on the 10th day of the month the poll is being held. (A reminder will be posted around the 1st of the month in
thewakeooc). If an essay is not submitted by the deadline, it will not be considered in the running for that round, but may be held for entrance into the next one. Polls will then be posted roughly 1-3 days later in
thewakeooc along with links to all the essays and the number of Angelii and/or Ashura that will be voted up for that round. Players will then have one week to read the submissions and cast their votes.
How many will be voted up at a time?
- That number will be determined by the staff, depending on both the number of open slots and the number of essays received for that particular round. (Ex: If there is a maximum of 10 open Angelii slots and 8 essays submitted, the staff may decide to vote up 5 for that round, thus partially closing the maximum requirement gap but leaving a handful of open slots for the next round.)
What happens if all the slots are filled and remain filled through one or more scheduled polls?
- At the discretion of the staff, a small number of additional slots may be added after one to two rounds are skipped due to full slots in order to allow opportunities for those who meet the requirements.
If my character isn't chosen, do I have to resubmit the essay?
- No. You will automatically be eligible for the next scheduled Ascension round. You may also feel free to polish and add to your essay at any time.
How many Ascended characters can each player have?
- The maximum is three. And in order to have a second, the first must have demonstrated proper activity in both the game (passed the last three activity checks) and their IC responsibilities as an Angelii/Ashura. Applications for a third Ascended will be determined by similar requirements and case by case.
Is there a minimum or maximum length for essays?
- No. We hesitate to set boundaries, as a character who has been in the game for a year and a half may need a longer essay as opposed to one who has only been around for the minimum four months. Write as little or as much as you feel is necessary to make your case for Ascension, though do keep in mind that while it is good to be thorough, an essay that is clear and concise is also appreciated.
I’m not sure what to include in my essay. Are there any examples I can look at to give me a better idea of how to handle this?
- You can always check the comments section below for other essays, or you can read through these two examples for ideas. (Both examples are for characters who are currently serving as Angelii and Ashura, respectively.)
Are there any guidelines I can use to write my essay?
- For both Angelii and Ashura, always keep in mind that change is the greatest determining factor. For Ashura, a secondary factor is gaining mastery of and making effective use of their Angelii abilities. In terms of basic guidelines, here are some questions you may want to ask yourself as you are writing your essay:
* Does the Wakened version of your character differ from the straight-out-of-canon version in any way? Have their behavior, decision making abilities, personal philosophy/moral standpoints, etc. changed at all? If so, how?
* Are the changes your character has gone through been positive or negative? How has this affected their interactions and previously established CR with others, including non-castmates and NPCs?
* What events and/or character interactions contributed to these changes in your character?
* Have these changes potentially impacted their path in terms of future development? If so, how?
* For Angelii applying for Ashura status, what has the character already contributed as a lower tier Ascended that would make them a good candidate for further promotion?
My character is qualified to Ascend, but there's no way they would accept it. Can I still enter them anyway?
Yes you can. We created such a category for this situation. It's called Thought of Antascension. It's a special one for voting purposes and allow for other kinds of development for your character.
Change is not an easy thing and it's not always straight forward. Remember, not everyone has to accept when Nautilus chooses someone to ascend to another rank. There's always a choice.
Can they be re-submitted later if they would change their mind and accept it?
Yes but let us know about it to keep everyone on the same page. They would be put in the normal categories (Angelii or Ashura depending on rank) then.
